Get the kids away from the TV on Saturday mornings, and let them create something instead! Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Michael’s stores offer both free workshops and craft classes for a small fee. With multiple locations around the DFW metroplex, there’s one near you!
Lowe’s Build & Grow Clinics
Every other Saturday morning, Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores offer a free Build & Grow Clinic for children up to age 16. Each participant will receive an apron, goggles, and a patch for each specific project. A Lowe’s employee will be available to assist with tools, instructions, and general questions. A typical project takes about 30 minutes to complete. Kids love collecting patches on their aprons to show off their progress!
Lowe’s has a community page on their website for Build & Grow Clinics where families share photos of their children completing projects. In larger cities, it’s a good idea to register online at your nearest store to ensure a spot for your child. You will need to print and sign a waiver, as well. Clinics are offered year-round.
If you just can’t make it to the free clinics, there are also kits available for purchase.
Home Depot Kids’ Workshop
On the first Saturday of each month, Home Depot offers a Kids Workshop for ages 5-12. Each participant receives a building materials kit, and apron, a certificate of completion, and a pin for their completed project. Kids enjoy adding a new pin to their apron each month! All tools and paints needed are supplied by the store. A Home Depot employee is on hand for assistance.
Again, it’s preferable to register on the website to reserve your spot and building kit. Projects are typically aligned with the seasons, and occasionally tied in with a movie release. Workshops are offered year-round.
Michael’s Arts and Crafts
While not free, there are some great, low-cost options in the Camp Creativity series at Michael’s Craft Stores this summer. The Castles and Princesses series features a variety of projects from medieval times, while Kids Club and Camp Creativity offer many pet-themed activities. Some projects start as low as $2 per child. Children aged 3 and up are welcome. Parents may shop while their children create! Register online, in store, or just drop in. For complete details on each project, see the Michael’s website.
