The 2016 Summer Olympics just kicked-off in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio beat out Madrid, Spain to host this years events. The U.S. is expected to do well in men`s and women`s basketball, track and field, and swimming events. The women are also contenders for gold in gymnastics and soccer. Sports new to the Olympics this year are golf and rugby sevens.
Tokyo will be the host of the 2020 Summer Olympics. Istanbul, Turkey was the host runner-up. Sports added to the line-up will be: baseball, softball, karate, sports climbing, surfing, and skateboarding. This will bring the competition total to 34 sports.
During the Olympics the WNBA is on a break. The Dallas Wings are 9-16 on the year and in 5th place in the Western Conference. The Wings have 4 home games and 9 total remaining on the season.
Brett Favre was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame this weekend. Others inducted in 2016 were Marvin Harrison, Kevin Greene, Orlando Pace, Ken Stabler, Dick Stanfel, Eddie DeBartolo Jr., and Tony Dungy. The HOF preseason game, Indianapolis Colts vs. Green Bay Packers, was cancelled because the paint used on the field created an unsafe surface for play.
In Oxnard, CA the Dallas Cowboys kicked-off the 2016 training camp. The Cowboys will look to get better on defense, with the addition of several key rookies, and hope to improve on offense as Tony Romo returns from injury. Denzel Washington attended one of the “Training Day” practices.
Texas Rangers are in first place in the AL West with 1/3 of the season remaining. They hold a 7 game lead with 50 games to go. Jonathan Lucroy is batting .300 with 3 HR’s
. Carlos Beltran is batting .333 in 6 games since joining the team. Rougned Odor leads the team with 21 HRs on the season and Ian Desmond leads in RBI with 66, Adrian Beltre 65. Cole Hamels leads the team in wins and has a 12-3 record while Sam Dyson is tops in saves with 24.
