Grand Prairie police officer Greg New was appointed to the Texas Crime Stoppers Council by Governor Gregg Abbott, Grand Prairie Police Department announced Tuesday.
Also appointed to the council are officers Joe Martino and Steve Squire.
New, a law enforcement veteran of 27 years, has worked with Texas Crime Stoppers for 18 years on a local level and is a certified trainer for the program. He has also helped develop the curriculum for training.
Founded in 1981, the Texas Crime Stoppers Council advises the governor on issues concerning local crime stoppers groups across Texas.
The Council consists of five members appointed by the Texas governor to serve four year terms.
According to the council’s website, “Texas Crime Stoppers is charged with providing resources to local crime stopper organizations through training and certification, administering grants to local programs from the state appropriated Crime Stoppers Assistance Fund, and engaging citizens to increase awareness and protect communities from crime.”
Citizens who participate in the program by reporting information about crimes can do so anonymously.
