When it comes to mexican food in the Metroplex, there is a competitive streak that not only translates to the local restaurants, but also local residents who are willing to preach their belief on who has the best tamales or micheladas in town any day of the week. When this Arlington Foodie thinks of mexican food, only one place comes to mind, Papaya Mexican Grill.
Located at 100 W. Pioneer Pkwy in Arlington, and owned by brothers Mario and Carlos Chiffer of Torreon, Mexico and long time friend Gilberto Zantoz of Guanjuato, Mexico, this small restaurant has left a huge footprint in Arlington, Texas. It’s no surprise this restaurant is making huge waves, the first person you meet as you walk in the door is the owner, often Mario Chiffer. No hostess, no waitstaff, only the owners of the restaurant serving every diner with a friendly smile and prompt chips and dip delivery.
The restaurant has a casual, sport bar atmosphere and seats approximately 20 tables and there is a small bar located in the back corner. The TVs are always set to the sports channel. The ambiance has a contemporary feel with orange tones and silver accented reeds on the walls. There is a huge chalkboard sharing specials of the day and a menu of common entrees. The menus are fairly simple; two laminated front and back cards sit on every table.
For a family of four, we order the queso dip, Fajitas Nortenas, 2 sangria swirl margaritas and 2 iced tea for the kids. The queso is a huge bowl of thick cheddar cheese, mixed with pico de gallo, special seasonings and ground beef. The fajitas Nortenas has 4 kinds of meat; chicken, beef marinated in lime, sausage and shrimp. Also included is marinated and grilled bell peppers and onions. Side dishes include your choice of charro or refried beans, we always order the refried beans and your choice of corn, flour (or both) tortillas. Also included are sour cream, shredded cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo and mexican rice with mixed vegetables.
As a regular diner who loves great mexican food and a mellow atmosphere with good service, this Arlington Foodie family highly recommends you try Papaya Mexican Grill.
