Celtic Fútbol Club has won 47 Scottish League Championships, 36 Scottish Cups, and were finalist in the 2003 UEFA Cup Finals. Now the Celtics’ soccer academy is taking a trip to Crossroads Christian Church( in Grand Prairie) to help with the Church’s soccer league. The Celtics’ coaches and players are hosting skills clinics once a week throughout the season for the church’s soccer players, aged 4-13. In these clinics, players learn dribbling, passing, agility, and speed drills, in addition to their regular practices, to enhance their skills and confidence.
The idea was thought up by Randy Staggs, official Sport’s Minister of Crossroads. In exchange for hosting the clinics, Crossroads have given the North Texas Celtic F.C. permission to use their fields for the North Texas Celtic’s teams. I spoke to Hilda Osorio, a kid’s sports director for Crossroads, and a spectator of the first clinic. She relayed that the parents seemed to be very excited and felt they were getting their money’s worth. The church is also benefiting greatly from this exchange. Having a select soccer team provide their services and skills to the church gives the Christian league more credibility, which gives them a better look for the community.
There has been little difficulty in this whole process. There are always complications that come with merging two organizations and communicating effectively, but so far the clinics have been going smoothly and the church is still able to instill it’s Christian values. Ms. Hilda Osorio also said that “ Crossroads sports exists to connect people to God and one another through the means of sports. Our goal is to offer our community a safe, fun, environment to play sports in hopes for them to hear the Gospel,” and I think that they are doing just that.
This is just one of the big ideas forming for Crossroads. There are also plans to make the season almost year-round instead of just the spring season and continue to use the Celtics, in hopes that some of the Crossroads players could grow up to play in the North Texas Celtic F.C.
